"Leather" is the eighth song on Tori Amos's 1992 debut album Little Earthquakes.

Background Edit

"Leather" was written and recorded during the first phase of creating Little Earthquakes. This period also yielded the songs "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", "Happy Phantom", "Winter", and "Mother", all of which were also recorded at Capitol Records and produced by Davitt Sigerson.[1]

The song was included both on a cassette Tori submitted for copyright in June 1990 and on the original rejected version of Little Earthquakes submitted in December that year.[2]

Tori began writing "Leather" after a conversation with a female friend who came by her Los Angeles apartment to borrow some sugar. Tori played her a song from Little Earthquakes and she responded with "that's not catchy". The friend left and Tori wrote "Leather" in one sitting.[3]

Remastered versions Edit

Remastered versions of "Leather" were released on Disc A of the 2006 boxset A Piano: The Collection and the 2015 reissue of Little Earthquakes.

Other appearances Edit

Comic Book Tattoo Edit

A seven-page story inspired by "Leather" was included in the 2008 graphic novel anthology Comic Book Tattoo, a collection of short comics based on Amos' songs.[4] "Leather" was written, pencilled, inked, coloured, and lettered by John Bivens.[5] (see pic of leather)

Live performances Edit

The earliest recorded performance of "Leather" was at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, and the song has been performed on all of Tori's tours since.[6]

While "Leather" has traditionally been played by Tori alone at the piano, new versions of the song have been introduced on recent tours. A string arrangement by John Phillip Shenale was played by the Apollon Musagete Quartet during the 2011 Night of Hunters Tour, and a similar arrangement was played by an octet from the Julliard School of Music in New York in 2012. As well, an orchestral arrangement was performed by the Metropole and Warsaw Orchestras on the Gold Dust Orchestral Tour in 2012.

Live performances of "Leather" are included on Live at Montreux, The Original Bootlegs, Legs & Boots, and From Russia With Love.
