"Tear In Your Hand" is the tenth song on Tori Amos's 1992 debut album Little Earthquakes.

Background[]

"Tear In Your Hand" was written and recorded during the second phase of creating Little Earthquakes, a period that also yielded "Girl", "Precious Things", and "Little Earthquakes", all of which were recorded in Eric Rosse's home studio.

The song was written during a visit to Rockville, Maryland, the city Tori spent much of her childhood in, for the holidays; Tori has since noted that "Tear in Your Hand" was "very much about feelings I had for certain people and lots of nostalgia coming up at that time."[1]

The lyrics of the song include a reference to the "Dream King", another name for Morpheus, the protagonist of Neil Gaiman's graphic novel The Sandman. Tori was introduced to The Sandman

"Tear in Your Hand" also refers to Gaiman himself ("Neil says hi by the way").

Tori wrote this lyric before meeting Gaiman in person
